“Just” Xanga?
Just a reminder—since most people do know that “once online, is forever.”
I had a chat this morning with a young user who kept saying I was taking Blogging “too seriously”…it’s “JUST” Xanga.

I tried to be polite, but the reminder that online stuff can haunt you, years after fell on deaf ears.
What you post online can be used against you—not only by future employers, who may choose not to hire you, or even fire you, but in court. Let’s face it…our posts are maps—bread crumb trails. If I were taking someone to court, you can BET I would check out anything they put online. I could find out not only about their personal habits, but how to push their buttons…and they would NEVER see it coming. But for the clueless, it’s “just xanga.”
Cling to that pretty dream…

Hmm disturbing thought.
I’m not sure anyone I know could dig me up on Xanga, to be honest. If they did, I don’t blog as myself. I blog as my internet personality. I don’t give out exact personal information and I certainly don’t talk about my life, with the one exception of the occasional rant which is always protected.. although, I’ve always known that what’s on the internet stays on the internet and can be brought up from any place at any time.
If everybody believed that, we wouldn’t have so much fun reading about criminals who post videos of their crimes and teachers mocking their students…But, you can’t convince them that it’s bad to text or talk on the phone and drive, either! Deaf ears is right.
I have a dear friend who is a lawyer…it’s now a regular practice at his firm to check out clients online…not because they are nosy, but because they can’t afford to be surprised in court. And insurance companies do it too…so smarter to be safe than sorry
i have never seriously thought about this. i am often in denial
sometimes it makes my existence bearable because i am so deeply flawed
but i hear you. thank you for the reminder.
I never post photos of my beautiful grandchildren because I am all to aware of how my ex daughter in law would blow a circuit.
I agree with you that what we post is open to the public eye here on Xanga, other blogging communities and especially face book.Good post.
Yep, that’s why I keep so much of my stuff in an off line diary. I hate hate hate facebook. The funny thing is if I were interviewing for a job I probably wouldn’t get it, just because I don’t have a facebook that anyone could look over.
it’s good to be reminded. thank you.
Oh, how right you are.
Recently I posted this video on Facebook:

Yes, it’s a parody, but I don’t think it’s too far from the truth.
A friend of mine started mocking me, calling me paranoid and such. My FB account doesn’t have my full name, doesn’t show my employer(s), or the schools I attended. My goal is to put as little information out there as possible.
His shows his full name (middle name and all), where he works, schools he attended, etc. It’s his choice (and many other people do the same), but it could cause him trouble down the line.
The email address that I use for FB is not the same one I use for business purposes. And since my full name isn’t on FB, I think that makes it pretty hard for prospective employers to find my account. Even if they do, they’ll need to do some good hacking. My account is on the highest privacy settings available. If you’re not my friend, you only see my profile pic and a couple of quotes. That’s it.
So, whoever wants to call me paranoid can go right ahead. But, I’ve had my identity stolen, and it’s SCARY. It happened before I even had FB!! The more precautions, the better.
I say fuck it, let them learn the heard way. I’m done sharing my life lessons free on xanga in exchange for abuse and harassment.
I think at a young age some things can be forgiven. I try and explain this to my son who wanted to put things on youtube of his friend and himself being stupid. So they wore masks. LOL
