  • Sounds GREAT…On Paper

There are a LOT of things that sound wonderful…in theory.

    Communism, for instance.

    Everyone works…everyone eats.

To the serfs of Tsarist Russia, that had appeal. But…that was on paper.

I know the Secessionists are squawking about wanting to leave the Union…and I half wish we would let them Allow me to explain. I was part of a Homeowner’s board of Trustees. We had condos, town homes, free standing houses—all under one main organization. The condos had three separate condo boards as well. Before I got on the Board (via election), one of the condo associations had SUED for the right to go off on their own. They were convinced they were paying too much in the way of fees—and were being exploited. There were about 150 units, if I recall.

    They won.

    Well…sort of.

One hundred and fifty units ends up paying a LOT more for garbage, and snow removal than 2700 households combined. It wasn’t long before the outraged condo owners were paying a butt load more for the SAME services…and still had to pay their own fees as well.  A few years of this…and? You guessed it…they wanted BACK in. Well…ok…BUT…you have to repay the community for the court costs of the suit. Before you go screaming about “not fair”…do remember that they cost ALL the other homeowners money. The ones who were willing to play by the rules? Why should they have to pay for the cost of the tantrum? There was screaming and ranting…but they accepted the agreement. It cost them more for a while…but eventually they had lower costs again, which made it easier to sell their property.

Of course…the states in question may find it much more expensive to survive than they imagined. Paying for their own roads, prisons and schools could get pricey. And Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are not going to be available to “non-citizens”. I bet they are begging to come back after two years…maximum. And we should probably let them…for a price. This IS THE USA, after all.

Yup…some things sound MIGHTY fine…until reality hits.

  • I’ll bet a large chunk of the reason for their desire to secede is racism. Bet my bottom dollar on that.

Another consideration is military protection. Let the secessionists pay for that for themselves.

It’s funny how many of these people wave the flag and call themselves patriots yet when the democracy they claim to love doesn’t go their way that whole democracy thing goes down the tubes.

During the Vietnam War conservatives had a motto complete with bumper stickers…”America. Love it or leave it.” With America moving forward today a different motto was suggested…”America. Love it or get left behind.”

  • I know Dude.

They don’t remember their own history.
Once, to be on the “wrong side of the tracks” was like leprosy.
And you didn’t have to be a minority…just the “wrong” kind of white, and poor.

  • @TheSutraDude - I found it funny how these “true Americans” and “patriots” always utter the phrase, “These colors don’t run.” Yet, because of how the election didn’t end up the way they wanted, they are wanting out and running away from America.

  • @laytexduckie - Excellent point. More like whiny little bastards…but that’s just me!

  • There is always a price to pay but sometimes it’s well worth it when they other side learns from it.

  • Divorce sounds great on paper but how many folks remarry the same person they divorced? Actually I do not recall a famous celebrity that divorced and remarried the same person probably because the stigma of being famously stupid.

There are a lot of Civil wars due to parts of that nation wanting to split away from the mother country. Remember the United States Civil war, the Nigeria civil war over Biafra and the Vietnam War? However there are a few nations that split like the breaking up of Yugoslavia which is definitely going thru a lot of splitting off pains.
If Texas splits off from the United States they could theoretically take care of themselves. Losing Texas would cause the Republican party left in the US to really be smaller and that would force the Republicans to move more to the center.

  • In Texas, the immediate removal of all military personnel and equipment would be disastrous to the economy! Airports would have to shut down. Every bit of Federal money for education, infrastructure–poof, gone. No Medicare or Medicade or Social Security payments. How many of us sane people would pack up and leave? How many corporations would leave because of the uncertain circumstances? Have they thought of that stuff? As Janice said, “freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.” Not sure that’s relevant, but I like the way it sounds!

  • those states that want to Secede  would  hurt the most because it is a documented fact that the BLUE states carry the Red states in tax dollars. Plus red states take more welfare that any other states. And they want to know why we like being liberal.

  • @TheSutraDude - yes that is the whole reason. They cause racism issues in their states too.

  • @whyzat - Exactly. One of the biggest arguments that I hear in favor of secession here in Texas is because they have a balanced budget, and there’s all these programs here that encourage job growth, like NASA and several military bases. It doesn’t seem to register with would-be secessionists that those are federally funded programs, and the only way that Texas’ budget is balanced is due to (1) a constitutional mandate TO be balanced, (2) it was only balanced thanks to an injection of TARP funds, and (3) education spending at all levels has been slashed. No wonder Texas trails the rest of the US in literacy levels, and now takes in more federal money then it sends to the Inland Revenue Service.

THIS gives an insight into their thoughts, and it’s interesting that the article doesn’t give information about monetary policy, social security benefits, and raising a militia that the leader of the Texas Independence Movement was asked about through this meeting. The comments are entertaining as well.

  • Thank goodness they can not just say they want out and then get enough signatures and leave.  The citizens who do not want this do not have to suffer due to the morons throwing a temper tantrum.
