  • Ode To My GPS

I’ve been tooling around for about three years, using a GPS.

I am not fully trusting of the tech…it still tries to take me the wrong way down a one way street on occasion. I cringe when it decides to “recalculate” in heavy traffic. And I don’t like not really knowing where I am going half the time…but it does make it easier to learn an area…no argument.

At the moment, I am not loving Garmin, however.

My old GPS was replace before the move…it was no longer “current”, and the bastards were asking for 50 bucks to “update” the maps. Half the cost of a new unit…that came with lifetime updates. I should have KNOWN there was a scam element. My old unit was still quite functional…as in mechanics. The new one is having “power issues”. It keeps shutting down…almost as soon as I turn it on, making it essentially useless. So I get on the horn with Garmin, where a bright young thing informs me that I probably need to update the maps. I counted to ten. So…if I update the maps, I still can’t make the stupid thing function. Hello?

  • I’ve never used one. I’m usually slow to pick up new technology. Part of that is I’d rather wait until it’s vastly improved from its initial release but also I lived in Manhattan for the better part of 35 years and didn’t need a GPS. I thought of buying one where I live now but then said to myself, I drive to the supermarket several blocks away, CVS a few more blocks away and that’s about it. A GPS telling me “Turn left here”, “Turn right here”, the two turns I make every time I go to the supermarket would drive me crazy.

I hope your GPS gets its power issue worked out.

  • “You missed the turn — turn around and go back — turn left here ~ ~ ~”

  • all in the name of progress! We have one, too, hasn’t been updated since we got it. Still works, but we’ve been on some interesting detours!
