  • "Just" Xanga?

Just a reminder---since most people do know that "once online, is forever."

I had a chat this morning with a young user who kept saying I was taking Blogging "too seriously"...it's "JUST" Xanga.

    http://www.squidoo.com/10-biggest-mistakes-you-can-make-on-the-internet

I tried to be polite, but the reminder that online stuff can haunt you, years after fell on deaf ears.

What you post online can be used against you---not only by future employers, who may choose not to hire you, or even fire you, but in court. Let's face it...our posts are maps---bread crumb trails. If I were taking someone to court, you can BET I would check out anything they put online. I could find out not only about their personal habits, but how to push their buttons...and they would NEVER see it coming. But for the clueless, it's "just xanga."

    Cling to that pretty dream...

  • Irony Defined

Back in college, I was up for a scholarship in my Senior year...at the time it was a matter of ego...or so I thought.

Reagan came in office and axed the HELL out of college aid...which forced me to quit school for a while.

I always thought it was a stupid move. I was one semester shy of graduation---and instead of landing a job as a college graduate, with a decent rate of pay they could tax me for, I ended up working for minimum wage for several years. The amount of Aid they cut from me was less than 2k....which would have come back as taxes probably in the first year after I graduated. I'm 51 now...and while I worked to finish that degree, I'm still two classes short.  I'm still limited in employment options because "almost a graduate" is not a "graduate." What happened to me happened to hundreds of thousands of college kids 30 years back...and no one talks about it.  The money that might have helped us finish our degrees was spent on "Star Wars technology"...which we never used, and is now obsolete.

But that scholarship...for creative writing? A friend of mine won it...and the profs told me later it had been between he and I up to the last instant. I never knew why they gave it to him.

Oh yeah...the ironic part. I kept writing. I had a book published in 2005, which is now part of the collection of the Library of Congress. My work is offered in several schools around the nation as an example of "contemporary American poetry",which is a kick, I admit. But I'm pretty sure the guy they gave the scholarship to never published a single thing.

    Yup...ironic.

  • Post Death Babies...

One of the more gruesome things that has come of "test tube baby" tech is the advent of posthumous  fertilization...ie, taking sperm from dead men to make babies with. I know...very sad...but it's led to some awful legal battles, and frankly it creeps me out.

The Supreme Court just made posthumous birth less profitable. Babies conceived AFTER the father's death are not legally recognized as "heirs".

If you still absolutely MUST make babies with someone who is deceased, you do so at your own cost...and risk.

I wonder if that applies to couples who froze embryos?

Will the fertilization count, rather than implantation?

And yes...we DO need laws...because we clearly have no idea how to act without them!

If you feel you need plastic surgery, I will not argue the point.

But DON'T taint your child, or force her to enable your issues by buying this book?

Every little girl should grow up believing she is JUST FINE, the way she is...keep the surgery to yourself.

  • What Is "Just"?

    http://news.yahoo.com/ex-student-webcam-spy-case-sentenced-064626141.html

NJ has to take the blame for an idiot Governor, a bunch of sad reality shows...and most recently, the trial of Dharun Ravi...also known as the Tyler Clementi Case. Tyler was the Rutgers freshman, who after learning that his room mate broadcast a web cam of his first weekend with another man, threw himself from the George Washington Bridge.  Ravi was not charged with killing Clementi, or even causing his death.

    http://news.yahoo.com/video/us-15749625/rutgers-verdict-dharun-ravi-guilty-in-webcam-case-28637848.html

    (The verdict being read)

Today he will hear what he will be sentenced to...and his parents have been doing everything possible to keep Junior out of jail. His mother is demanding "Justice For Dhuran". I've been following the case since it happened, and frankly, I believe justice was indeed done...no matter WHAT the Ravi's think.

    1. Dhuran was offered an AMAZING plea bargain, that would have included no time served. His actions were deliberate. He could have walked with a slap on the wrist judicially...but he chose to reject the plea...and roll the dice.

    2. He did not expect to be found guilty.

    3. When he was, he demanded that he not have to face jail time.

    Ummm.

His supporters are arguing "racial bias", which is bullshit. I would argue that had Dhuran been black, or latino, he would already BE in jail...and no one would have offered him a sweetheart deal like the plea he rejected. He could have avoided jail very easily. While the sentence sounds severe, I will be he is not looking at anything even close to the max. But his parents are calling this a "prank", and believe that ANY jail time is unjust.  I'm pretty sure Tyler Clemente's parents see it a bit differently. Their son is dead.  Ravi is not a US citizen. He never filed for it, and now, thanks to this sentence, never will be eligible for citizenship. (Convicted felons are not eligible to become citizens.)

It doesn't matter if he doesn't serve one day...the conviction means he will never be a citizen. His parents claim that he didn't "mean" to hurt anyone, and that punishing him is wrong. (I think ALL parents feel that way, when their kids are convicted?) Most drunk, or impaired drivers don't "mean" to kill anyone...but that doesn't protect them from legal penalties. Our own citizens lose their right of franchise (the vote) if they are convicted felons. Injustice would be giving this man special rights. I suspect his parents are more upset at the thought that this son will be deported. Had he applied for citizenship, or had they applied FOR him, in his childhood, this would not be an issue. Their mistake does not change the outcome of the case. It merely makes the penalty for their son more severe.

    That isn't the law's problem.

I'm sorry their son will probably be deported...but he DID commit the crime.  Another young man is dead. They will at least know Ravi is alive, a comfort the Clemente's do not have. It's a pity that Ravi left a trail of electronic evidence that went back weeks before he met his room mate. It established not a single act, but a long held attitude that led to a SERIES of bad acts. It doesn't matter that he didn't know he was breaking the law...we don't accept ignorance as an excuse.  And I am sorry that both families will suffer. But I am OFFENDED by this mother's request for "Justice for Dhuran". He has been shown justice, Madame. You  just don't happen to like the form it took.

    Thoughts?

  • A Hairy Question...

A few years back, a man I know freaked me out...by touching my hair.

(The stuff on my head, you pervs.)

His wife has very short, severe hair...mine is worn long.

I was waiting in front of my daughter's school, he came up behind me, and started TO UNBRAID MY HAIR.

I had a fit. That was over the line---you do NOT touch a woman's hair casually.  That is intimate.

At the time, half my friends agreed with me...the other half though it was odd...but not a big deal.

So...question of the day...is touching a woman's hair an intimacy? Should someone you barely know feel ok doing it? Is it ok to get upset?

Oh...and if you have the time, I've love to hear the logic behind your answer. Guys? Is a man touching your woman's hair ok? Or is he hitting on her?

  • 30 Kids?

For those judgmental vile asshats who think  women "should keep their legs shut", we now have a young man who has more 30 children with 11 different women. He makes minimum wage, and half his cash goes to" child support"...less than 2 bucks a week per child.

He wants his child support REDUCED...

    Yup...obviously WOMEN are the problem....

  • For Desiree...Soon to Be 21

    Days shy of nineteen years,
    a laughter that puts bubbles
    into champagne,
    eyes that glimmer with mischief,
but never reveal the large heart
she tries not to wear on her sleeve,
yet her smile is all mystery,
almost a myth to the believing.

    I see the baby,
    the toddler,
    school girl,
    out cast,
    suddenly a woman,
    her hair flowing and wild,
dancing to her own play list,
    brimming with courage
I only wished I could have owned.

My real job is to become obsolete,
the wings she never had as birthright,
    she forged like Daedalus,
    using not mere wax,
    but better things,
    more suited to solo flight.

    Oh this heart of mine
    leaps like a giddy lord,
    weeps like a lost soul,
    knowing that she is finally
not the person I hoped she could be,
but the one she chose to be.

    Pity the soul who glances
at La Giaconda in her glory,
    catches the glint of green
    in her quiet eyes,
    and loses his heart
    to the wonder,
    the weightless shine,
    the gleam of angel
    the imp of a female
    I carried to birth,
now so utterly her very own.
